Turning Points Self-Portrait
After studying the work of Frida Kahlo, students reflected on influential events in their own lives. Students designed their piece around the event of their choice, and also had freedom of choosing medium. The thought that went into these pieces was incredible and impressive, and the final products showcased a lot of variety.
Stippled Grid Drawing

Students chose an image of a celebrity and created a grid drawing to outline the contour of the face and features. Then, students created value through stippling with a fine point sharpie.
Illustrated Dictionary Page

Students were given a dictionary page. They to choose and interpret a word to drive their design. Some students were very straight-forward with their artistic choices, and some leaned more towards ambiguity with their designs. Students were able to use their media of choice, but had to include lettering to highlight their word.
Op Art Cube

Students worked with optical illusions and nets to create a cube that showed six different designs. Students used cardstock, a net template, and sharpies to create their pieces.
Creative Value Scale

Students were challenged to create a value scale within an image of their choice. They had to show a minimum of 5 steps of value and experiment with varying shades of graphite pencil.
Complex Color Wheel

The first formal project of the year for Art II students was a Complex Color Wheel. Students had to create radial symmetry. Students mapped out a 360 degree circle, breaking it up into 30 degree sections. They then made a template that fit into the 30 degree section. They were required to include primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, as well as showing a tint of each. Tempera paints were used for both the color wheel and the background.
